Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)

The little things that we do make a difference in opposing racism. Thanks for the reminder Woody Guthrie and John McCutcheon.

Dozens of musicians re-recorded this culturally important 1948 song by Woody Guthrie about U.S. racism. I’ve listened and cried many times in live performances over my lifetime. My published comments after a Pete Seeger performance in the 1990s led to a neighbor’s complaint and an investigation by local government that I was housing undocumented workers. The case was dismissed as baseless but showed me that hateful bigotry combined with tyrannical government can be dangerous. We have learned nothing about the absurdity and cruelty of this INS policy and have again allowed politicians to use racism and bigotry against farm workers to raise campaign money and get re-elected.
